At what age did your baby begin taking regular naps during the day?  My baby is almost 5 weeks old.  He is a great night time sleeper (waking only once a night) but there is no rhyme or reason to his daytime sleep.  He is awake often during the day and then there are some days when he is very sleepy. I've read a number of different things about sleep.  Not sure if I should try to "encourage" regular daytime naps at this age or let him sleep when he is tired.

Interested to hear from everyone...

My baby is five months and I think he started regular napping at 4 months. I did keep him on the schedule of eat, awake, sleep every three hours starting at 8 weeks old. But no rhyme or reason till now.

He's still quite young, let him sleep when he is tired at that age. I have a five month old, and a three year old. They are/were regular sleepers on a schedule by three to four months at 10am & 2pm naps. You have to be consistent to get their body clocks on a regular schedule. A really good book I learned from is Sleeping through the Night, by Jodi A. Mindell. It teaches you how to "sleep train" babies and children of all ages, from infant to toddler and up--nap times, and night time, etc. Good luck!
Thank you! He is sleeping a lot this week...maybe he is busy growing! :o)
you don't want to mess with the great night-time routine you have going on, that is for sure. Mine were the same way, they slept from 11 pm to 7 am straight from about 4 weeks old but during the day was unpredictable. I would get them out for carriage walks at the same time every day, late morning. That usually got them a bit tired so I would feed them as soon as we got back and like magic, the noon nap started happening! good luck!
My youngest are 3. Until they were 1 they took a nap religiously from 11 to 2. Now, it is hit or miss on whether they will actually lie down! LOL
The carriage rides definetely work. Next week I am actually going to be allowed to take him places...he gets his shots. Will be interesting to see how our days and (his naps) change once we are mobile!
My daughter is 6 months now, and although she is a great sleeper at night, she does not nap during the day for more than 40 minutes at a shot.  She has days when she may only get 40 minutes in period, which makes her a very grumpy baby come dinner time!!  I'm going to try and look for that book, because I'd love to get her on a regular napping schedule!!

Gosh it's hard to think back--& it wasn't even that long ago--but I don't remember having a "routine" during the day until my children were a little older.  Maybe around 3 months?  I do remember them both taking a morning nap and an afternoon nap, though.  Good luck :)

My daughter is 7 weeks old and like your son she sleeps wonderful at nightime( no waking up sleeps through the night). However during the day it is a mystery if and when she will nap.  No 2 days seem to be the same-I try to follow routine.  She wakes up and she eats, then i bathe her, dress her for the day and take her for a walk.  Sometimes she will nap during the walk other times she is wide awake.  Then she eats again, and I put her in the swing with some baby einstein on.  Again some days this will encourage he to sleep other days she is awake.  My goal is for her to take a quick nap in the am (around 10ish) then a longer nap in the pm (1ish).  Don't know if  am aiming for too high a goal!
