Circumcision:know the facts before you make a decision

I recently gave birth to my second child, a son. Before he was born my husband and I did extensive research on the topic of circumcision and were absolutely shocked by what we discovered.Before you decide to circumcise your son ask yourself why you are doing it. Most people don't know that circumcision is medically unnecessary; that it's considered elective cosmetic surgery. When I ask someone why they chose to circumcise their son after they ask me why I didn't circumcise mine, the majority of the time they give me a puzzled look and say,"well,, I'm not sure. Because it's just what you do." In my opinion, cutting off part of my child's genitals just because it's the "norm" is not a good enough reason. At no time while we were in the hospital did any caregiver provide us with information on the procedure. It was not explained to us why a circumcision is "necessary" or what exactly the surgery entails. We were just given a form by the nurse to sign, she didn't even ask us IF we wanted our son to have one, just to sign for consent.
